Alissa's SciFi and Fantasy Picks
A captivating story about a witch and a mad scientist, who also happen to be childhood friends, working to save the world from the apocolypse. Wonderful and engaging story with two main characters that you won't be able to forget.
Getting saddled with the name Galadriel is hard enough without the extra burden of a dark prophesy that fortells you destroying the world. If she can survive magic school without being eaten by vicious Maleficaria maybe she could turn the whole prophesy thing around? I literally could not put this book down, and once I did (because I finished it) I couldn't stop picking it back up again. I've read it twice and listened to the audiobook once.
Given the choice between a prison sentence and a full ride at Yale seems like an obvious choice, but monitering the secret societies (or hosues) and their illicit, occult activities may be more than Alex bargained for. When a girl is murdered and she believes one of the houses is to blame, can she discover the truth before she meets the same fate?

Sancia is a theif who can "read" the world around her by touching inanimate objects with her bare skin. When the job that was supposed to be her golden ticket ends up being a part of a plot to change the face of the world entirely (and not for the better), Sancia must work with a strange group of people she doesn't know if she can trust to ensure her own freedom, and that of the entire world.

A gothic horror story that stayed with me long after I put it down, with a building sense of dread that kept me up at night. Noemi receives a strange and disturbing letter from her cousin and travels to the dilapidated manor house where her cousin lives with her new husband and his family. The strange rules and customs of the family are nothing compared to the entity that starts to haunt Noemi's dreams. Can she save herself and her cousin, and is there even anything to save them from?
Masterfully written and haunting, I could not put this book down. It is a beautifully written, character driven story that will unexpectedly draw you in, take you in unexpected directions, and make you gasp in surprise. My only complaint is that the book ended! More please!
This is a great book that blends suspense and the supernatural to create a realistic mystery that is just a little more than it seems. As an SF native it is also always great to read a book that takes place in my hometown. This was a fun, creepy, and interesting read.
A "memoir" of a woman in a Victorian age world who wants to study dragons. Despite everything she does manage to achieve her dream and promptly falls into an adventure. This is a great, well written series that is a lot of fun.
The first book in the series was absolutely amazing and gave hints to a really fantastic backstory. Holy s*** this book DELIVERS! How this book is better than the first, I will never know. It is SO GOOD!
This is an amazing book. It is suspenseful and mysterious and creepy. All of the characters have questionable motives, and nothing is certain until the end. It will keep you gripped until the very end. Seriously SO GOOD.
A Dream-like narrative that pulls you backward and forward through time to weave together the magical story of a dazzling circus and all of the wonderfully rich characters that are tied to the marvelous spectacle. This story moves me every single time I read it. I will never not be enamored with the circus and the beautiful and vibrant people who populate it.
A wonderfully rich story of death and the maiden that drew me in and took me on a fantastic journey. Magic, mystery, and monsters abound!
Kelly Barnhill has a way of creating a beautiful, vibrant, living story that will stay within you long after you've finished reading. In a world where women can spontaneously transform into dragons, Alex, a young woman who has lost her Aunt to the Mass Dragoning of 1955 must live with this change to her family and her life and learn to understand what her place in it might be. An impossible to put down book that will make you wish for wings of your own.
